There is no medicine like encouragement. Its healing powers are able to lift up the discouraged, comfort the grieving, strengthen the weak, and relight the fires of hope within. Yet encouragement is like a vaccine in limited supply for a virulent, debilitating disease – we need a lot more of it. The world is full of discouragers: Overdrawn bank accounts, poor health, the loss of a loved one, being passed over for a promotion, physical decline with the passing of years, broken vows. You can probably think of some other sources of personal discouragement to add to this list. Then when we consider the world around us, there always seems to be an abundant supply of other discouraging factors: The economy, global terrorism, wars, poverty, widespread forms of abuse, social turmoil of all kinds. The danger of focusing on these discouragers is that your perception can become like the eyes of the honeybee – you magnify them voluminously. Everything is distorted and out of whack! Someone has written that, “He that is discouraged measures God by his own little contracted model and limits infinite power by finite apprehensions.” Even when surrounded by discouraging circumstances, and there seems to be no one available to offer much-needed words of encouragement, my friend’s recommendation offers a sure cure for what ails you! The first pill is, Take a SHORT look at your discouragement, but make sure that you don’t major on the minors. Refuse to let small, temporary discouragements dominate your thinking. “O my soul, don’t be discouraged. Don’t be upset. Expect God to act. He will do it” (Psalm 41:11). The second pill is, Take a NARROW look at yourself. Be prejudiced in your own favor, seeking to find positives even in the most negative situations. “When a man is gloomy, everything seems to go wrong; when he is cheerful, everything seems right” (Proverbs 15:15). The third pill is, Take a LONG look at God your Father, because He knows what you need – and understands how and when to provide it, even better than you do. “Ask Me and I will tell you some remarkable secrets about what is going to happen here” (Jeremiah 33:3). Reflection/Discussion Questions
1. How are you feeling today? Are you discouraged, or have you had to battle with discouragement recently? Explain your answer. 1. Where do you go for encouragement? Is there someone you can turn to for encouragement, or do you have a favorite activity that helps to take your mind off your troubles? What do you think of the four little “pills” suggested in this “Monday Manna” for overcoming discouragement? 4. How might you use this “encouragement medicine” in your life today, or to help someone you know who is discouraged? |
