帖撒羅尼迦前書導論

 

序

第一次較認真的研讀帖撒羅尼迦前書，是在一九六六年；當時筆者從英國倫敦聖經學院畢業後剛好一年，應邀在香港基督徒學生福音團契屬下的中學生基督徒團契所舉辦的領袖訓練營（七月廿六至三十日於南丫島舉行）負責研經講道，所講的就是帖撒羅尼迦前書。四年後，在美國福樂神學院進修期間，選讀了由新約教授夏理遜博士1講授的「帖撒羅尼迦前後書」一科。在「中神」專職任教期間，曾於七九年冬季學期（一至三月）教授「帖撒羅尼迦前後書原文釋經」一科，同時在延伸課程講解這兩卷書。過去兩年，在撰寫此註釋的過程中，對帖撒羅尼迦前書作了比以前任何時期都較詳細的研究，亦對這卷書有了進一步的認識。

帖撒羅尼迦後書跟前書的關係非常密切，這兩卷書的註釋通常都以一本「帖撒羅尼迦前後書註釋」的形式面世。2筆者原來的計劃也是這樣，不過單是前書註釋的資料使已足夠成書，若加上後書的註釋會使整本書變得太長，並且要多等至少一年才可以付梓，因此天道書樓欣然同意先出版「帖撒羅尼迦前書註釋」，日後再出版後書的註釋。這較不尋常的安排對筆者是很大的鼓勵，為此要特別向天道書樓出版部經理高明發先生致謝，也順便謝謝高先生以編者身份在文字潤色上所給予筆者的幫助。

筆者在「中神」校本部教授「帖撒羅尼迦前後書原文釋經」一科時，修讀的同學只有三名！這三位校友已分別成為本院延伸部的講師、教會牧師和大學講師，3然而筆者未能以「重質不重量」一語自慰，除非筆者有理由相信，他們今天的成就跟他們曾修讀該科的事實──活現於帖撒羅尼迦前後書的保羅，確是一位極優秀的牧者和教師──多少有點關係。這可以部份解釋，為甚麼筆者最近接受天道書樓一位編輯同工的訪問時，曾就自己近年間撰寫註釋書的工作表達以下的心願：「希望透過文字在某程度上繼續﹝我﹞的『教學』，並且把對象從一所神學院的學生擴闊至較大的範圍。」與此同時，筆者也「希望透過文字使那些繁忙的教牧同工、神學生或有心追求真理的信徒能得凓幫助。」4

祈盼此書蒙神恩待，以致能達到上述的雙重目的。

壹　帖撒羅尼迦前書的作者

作者在信上兩次自稱為保羅（一1，二18）。只有少數的學者曾對帖撒羅尼迦前書是出自保羅手筆此結論提出質疑；最顯著（但不是最早）的例子要算十九世紀的包珥和他的杜平根學派。1他們提出的反對理由主要有三點：帖前在詞藻和體裁上有別於四封主要的保羅書信（羅馬書、哥林多前後書、加拉太書）；帖前沒有舊約的引句；保羅最顯著的思想沒有在信上出現。2包珥認為帖前是根據使徒行傳（包珥視之為二世紀的作品）的記敘寫成的，信內含有真正的保羅書信（尤其是哥林多前後書）的回憶；他又認為既然帖前二章十六節有神的忿怒「終於」（現中）臨到了猶太人這句話，按理必先有主後七十年耶路撒冷淪陷的事實；因此他結論說，帖前是保羅的一個門徒在主後七十年之後寫的，他的目的是要恢復教會對主之再來的興趣。但這種極端的看法只是「批判學歷史中的一件怪物」，在今天的學者中完全不獲支持。3

較近期的一些學者採用電腦統計分析法研究保羅書信的字彙和體裁，其中一位達到下面的結論：帖撒羅尼迦後書、提多書及腓利門書的篇幅太短，不能產生任何結果；羅馬書、哥林多前後書及加拉太書是保羅寫的；以弗所書、腓立比書及歌羅西書跟提摩太前後書分別出自另外兩個不同的人的手筆；帖前則介乎此二組（即弗、腓、西，及提前、提後）之間，它可能屬於其中一組，或兩組也不屬，但不能同時屬於兩組。4換言之，帖前並不是保羅所寫的（該作者認為帖後也不是）。但帖前雖然比後書較長，卻仍然不是一封很長的信，5將電腦分析法應用於這麼短的一封信，其有效性是頗值得懷疑的。6此外，倘若西拉是保羅的代筆人（參五27註釋），而他在構成此信的事上扮演了相當重要的角色，那便足以解釋討論中的這位學者所提出關於帖前在體裁方面跟四封主要的保羅書信的分別了。7

總而言之，今天的學者中鮮有人懷疑帖前並非保羅所寫的，以致有釋經者乾脆的假定此信是出自保羅手筆，「因為〔我們〕沒需要對無人質疑的〔論點〕加以辯護」。8

不過，西拉和提摩太於卷首與保羅聯名出現，並且除了三處地方突然用單數的第一人稱「我」字外（二18，三5，五27；參帖後二5，三17），全書都是用複數的第一人稱「我們」，這現象有討論的必要（詳見一1a註釋）。筆者認為，此信（及後書）的真正作者只是保羅一人，「我們」一詞則按不同的文理有略為不同的內涵，但並不表示西拉和提摩太有份寫這封信（及後書）。
