Now when Athaliah, Ahaziah's mother, saw that her son was dead, she set about to destroy all the royal family.

| 11:2 |
But Jehosheba, King Joram's daughter, Ahaziah's sister, took Joash son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the king's children who were about to be killed; she put him and his nurse in a bedroom. Thus she hid him from Athaliah, so that he was not killed;
|
| 11:3 |
he remained with her six years, hidden in the house of the LORD, while Athaliah reigned over the land.
|
| 11:4 |
But in the seventh year Jehoiada summoned the captains of the Carites and of the guards and had them come to him in the house of the LORD. He made a covenant with them and put them under oath in the house of the LORD; then he showed them the king's son.

| 11:5 |
He commanded them, "This is what you are to do: one-third of you, those who go off duty on the sabbath and guard the king's house
|
| 11:6 |
(another third being at the gate Sur and a third at the gate behind the guards), shall guard the palace;
|
| 11:7 |
and your two divisions that come on duty in force on the sabbath and guard the house of the LORD
|
| 11:8 |
shall surround the king, each with weapons in hand; and whoever approaches the ranks is to be killed. Be with the king in his comings and goings."
|
| 11:9 |
The captains did according to all that the priest Jehoiada commanded; each brought his men who were to go off duty on the sabbath, with those who were to come on duty on the sabbath, and came to the priest Jehoiada.
|
| 11:10 |
The priest delivered to the captains the spears and shields that had been King David's, which were in the house of the LORD;

| 11:11 |
the guards stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, from the south side of the house to the north side of the house, around the altar and the house, to guard the king on every side.
|
| 11:12 |
Then he brought out the king's son, put the crown on him, and gave him the covenant; they proclaimed him king, and anointed him; they clapped their hands and shouted, "Long live the king!"
|
| 11:13 |
When Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she went into the house of the LORD to the people;
|
| 11:14 |
when she looked, there was the king standing by the pillar, according to custom, with the captains and the trumpeters beside the king, and all the people of the land rejoicing and blowing trumpets. Athaliah tore her clothes and cried, "Treason! Treason!"
|
| 11:15 |
Then the priest Jehoiada commanded the captains who were set over the army, "Bring her out between the ranks, and kill with the sword anyone who follows her." For the priest said, "Let her not be killed in the house of the LORD."
|
| 11:16 |
So they laid hands on her; she went through the horses' entrance to the king's house, and there she was put to death.
|
| 11:17 |
Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and people, that they should be the LORD's people; also between the king and the people.
|
| 11:18 |
Then all the people of the land went to the house of Baal, and tore it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces, and they killed Mattan, the priest of Baal, before the altars. The priest posted guards over the house of the LORD.
|
| 11:19 |
He took the captains, the Carites, the guards, and all the people of the land; then they brought the king down from the house of the LORD, marching through the gate of the guards to the king's house. He took his seat on the throne of the kings.
|
| 11:20 |
So all the people of the land rejoiced; and the city was quiet after Athaliah had been killed with the sword at the king's house.
|
| 11:21 |
Jehoash was seven years old when he began to reign.
|
| 11:22 |
But Pharaoh said to him, "What do you lack with me that you now seek to go to your own country?" And he said, "No, do let me go."
|
| 11:23 |
God raised up another adversary against Solomon, Rezon son of Eliada, who had fled from his master, King Hadadezer of Zobah.
|
| 11:24 |
He gathered followers around him and became leader of a marauding band, after the slaughter by David; they went to Damascus, settled there, and made him king in Damascus.
|
| 11:25 |
He was an adversary of Israel all the days of Solomon, making trouble as Hadad did; he despised Israel and reigned over Aram.
|
| 11:26 |
Jeroboam son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah, a servant of Solomon, whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow, rebelled against the king.
|
| 11:27 |
The following was the reason he rebelled against the king. Solomon built the Millo, and closed up the gap in the wall of the city of his father David.
|
| 11:28 |
The man Jeroboam was very able, and when Solomon saw that the young man was industrious he gave him charge over all the forced labor of the house of Joseph.
|
| 11:29 |
About that time, when Jeroboam was leaving Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him on the road. Ahijah had clothed himself with a new garment. The two of them were alone in the open country

when Ahijah laid hold of the new garment he was wearing and tore it into twelve pieces.
|
| 11:31 |
He then said to Jeroboam: Take for yourself ten pieces; for thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, "See, I am about to tear the kingdom from the hand of Solomon, and will give you ten tribes.
|
| 11:32 |
One tribe will remain his, for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city that I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.
|
| 11:33 |
This is because he has forsaken me, worshiped Astarte the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of Moab, and Milcom the god of the Ammonites, and has not walked in my ways, doing what is right in my sight and keeping my statutes and my ordinances, as his father David did.
|
| 11:34 |
Nevertheless I will not take the whole kingdom away from him but will make him ruler all the days of his life, for the sake of my servant David whom I chose and who did keep my commandments and my statutes;
|
| 11:35 |
but I will take the kingdom away from his son and give it to you-- that is, the ten tribes.
|
| 11:36 |
Yet to his son I will give one tribe, so that my servant David may always have a lamp before me in Jerusalem, the city where I have chosen to put my name.
|
| 11:37 |
I will take you, and you shall reign over all that your soul desires; you shall be king over Israel.
|
| 11:38 |
If you will listen to all that I command you, walk in my ways, and do what is right in my sight by keeping my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did, I will be with you, and will build you an enduring house, as I built for David, and I will give Israel to you.

| 11:39 |
For this reason I will punish the descendants of David, but not forever."
|
| 11:40 |
Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam; but Jeroboam promptly fled to Egypt, to King Shishak of Egypt, and remained in Egypt until the death of Solomon.

| 11:41 |
Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, all that he did as well as his wisdom, are they not written in the Book of the Acts of Solomon?
|
| 11:42 |
The time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years.
|
| 11:43 |
Solomon slept with his ancestors and was buried in the city of his father David; and his son Rehoboam succeeded him.
